Our grounds at the Dog & Crook overlook just a small part from what is the vast breathtaking gardens and arboretum of Sir Harold Hillier, comprising 72 hectares and accommodating over 42,000 trees and shrubs with beautiful long walks and tea rooms, just a four minute journey up Crook Hill and then left on to Jermyn’s Lane.
The little further located on the famous River Test is Hampshire’s most historic market town, Romsey, which features a rare and intact medieval hall house that was part of Romsey Abbey (circa 1120 AD,) and which today serves as the centre for Anglican worship and civic events. Surrounded by shops and with a charter granted by King Henry 1st allowing a market to be held every Sunday, stalls will keep you browsing for the afternoon.
Romsey Farmers’ Market takes place every first Sunday of the month from 10am – 1pm and the Alma Road Car Park becomes a vibrant centre of activity with over thirty stallholder producers attending regularly selling meat, eggs, cheese, cakes, wine, cider, bread, honey, jams and pickles, fresh and smoked fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, plants and shrubs. Delicious, mouth-watering hot buffalo burgers are popular with visitors, plus plenty of tasting opportunities and chances to meet and chat with the producers.
If history is your appeal then maybe journey to Mottisfont Abbey a romantic house and gallery set in beautiful riverside gardens. Ancient trees, bubbling brooks and rolling lawns frame this lovely old house. Crafted from a medieval priory, it is full of surprises, with art that intrigues and delights. Throughout the year see’s different exhibitions in the gallery. Carpets of spring bulbs, a stunning walled rose garden, rich autumn leaves and a colourful winter garden make Mottisfont a feast for the senses.
Let’s not forget the Kids! Paulton’s Park has 70 rides and attractions. Featuring the Peppa Pig World theme park based on the children’s television series and The Lost Kingdom theme park area which includes 27 animatronic dinosaurs. The park covers 140 acres of land and features a collection of around 80 species of birds and animals… need we say more!! Only a 16 minute car journey from the Dog and Crook it’s the perfect day out for all the family.
